How Massage Can Help Improve Sleep

Massage is beneficial to many areas of health and wellness. Studies have shown it can help with back pain, migraines, overall anxiety, concentration, and even disease and illness.

But did you know that your sleep can be improved from massage as well? Sleep terrors, restless leg syndrome, and bruxism are just a few of the sleeping issues that massage has been shown to help with. Here’s how massage can improve each of these issues if you are struggling with your sleep:

Sleep Terrors

Sleep terrors are often the cause of anxiety or stress from your waking life being released when your conscious mind is asleep. For many people, sleep terrors can make the act of sleeping into a terror itself. These terrors cause individuals to avoid bedtime and stay up extremely late. Furthermore, it can result in excessive eating and problems with weight as many people eat to stay awake.

Sleep terrors can be quelled, however, and one of the main ways of doing this is with massage therapy. Massage relaxes the body and calms the mind, which facilitates a more prepared body and mind when bedtime rolls around. It can also reduce overall anxiety and slacken muscle tension.

Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless leg syndrome or RLS is technically a sleep disorder, but most people notice it when they are awake, and it’s what keeps these individuals from sleeping. Massage can help, largely because it stimulates blood flow and increases circulation. Circulation issues are a common cause of RLS.

Bruxism (Teeth Grinding at Night)

Bruxism has been shown to be positively correlated with stress and anxiety in waking life. This means that the more stress you have, the more likely you are to experience bruxism. Again, massage helps with bruxism because it relaxes the body, mind, and spirit, which allows you to have a loose, more relaxed jaw and a smaller likelihood of teeth grinding.

If any of the above sleep disorders have been affecting your ability to get a good night’s sleep, seek the help of massage to do away with them and get better rest for the health of your body and mind.
